22 January 2018 – While the global economy has kept up modest growth, the total number of unemployed people will likely remain high in 2018 – at above 192 million – and it will be harder to find a decent job, the United Nations labour agency reported on Monday.

“Even though global unemployment has stabilized, decent work deficits remain widespread: the global economy is still not creating enough jobs. Additional efforts need to be put in place to improve the quality of work for jobholders and to ensure that the gains of growth are shared equitably,” ILO Director-General Guy Ryder said.

Palestinian officials slam Trump's threat to cut US aid

Jerusalem (CNN)Palestinian officials responded angrily Wednesday to US President Donald Trump's threat to cut off aid to the Palestinian territories unless Palestinian leaders agree to engage in peace negotiations with Israel.

Addressing Trump directly, PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat said to CNN, "So, Mr. Trump, your art of the deal. What's left to negotiate?" referring to Trump's 1987 book, "Trump: The Art of the Deal."

"You are moving from negotiating to dictating and then you are threatening us if we don't accept your dictations -- that you are going to cut aid."

For Palestinians, Trump's Jerusalem move is the end of the peace process

On Tuesday, Trump tweeted, "We pay the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don't even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel. We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?"

3 January 2018 – The top United Nations human rights official on Wednesday urged the Iranian authorities to handle the protests that have taken place around the country “with great care” so as not to further inflame violence and unrest.

“I am deeply disturbed by reports that more than 20 people, including an 11-year-old boy, have died and hundreds have been arrested during the recent wave of protests in Iran,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, in a separate statement that urged the authorities to investigate all deaths and serious injuries that have occurred so far.
