Venezuela protests: Looting, shootings leave 13 dead in one day

(CNN)After weeks of violent protests that left at least 22 people dead, Venezuelans took to the streets Saturday dressed in white to pay tribute to those who were killed in the latest anti-government demonstrations.

The peaceful demonstrations drew several hundred people, mostly singing or praying, as well as a large police presence.

Trump's North Korea policy might just be working

(CNN)Saturday, the 105th birthday of Kim Il Sung, known as North Korea's Eternal President, was tense.

Many observers feared North Korea would carry out its sixth nuclear test, or that the USS Carl Vinson and its escorts -- which Pyongyang at the time thought were just off the coast of North Korea -- would attack.

Very few people outside the US administration knew the carrier group was in fact some 3,500 miles away from the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea timeline: From Trump's inauguration to now

Both North Korea and the United States warned of devastating consequences if the other made a move. Only a small miscalculation in Pyongyang, Washington or Beijing might have sent the situation spiraling into violence.

But in the end none of that happened. Instead, the next day, North Korea tried and failed to launch a medium-range missile, to which neither the United States nor China responded. We got through yet another North Korean crisis.

8 times Russia blocked a UN Security Council resolution on Syria

(CNN)The UN Security Council (UNSC) failed yet again on Wednesday to pass a resolution condemning last week's chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people in Syria.

Permanent member Russia vetoed the resolution which sought to condemn the killings and call on the Assad regime to cooperate with an international investigation into the attack.

Over 20 UNSC resolutions on Syria have been passed, most with unanimous backing, but if one of the five permanent members of the UNSC vetoes a draft resolution, it automatically fails.

Russia blocks Security Council action on reported use of chemical weapons in Syria’s Khan Shaykhun

12 April 2017 – With a ‘no’ vote from permanent member Russia, the United Nations Security Council today failed to adopt a resolution that would have condemned the reported use of chemical weapons in Syria and called on the Government to cooperate with an investigation into the incident.

While 10 of the Council’s 15 members voted in favour, Russia rejected the text, as permanent member China, as well as non-permanent members Ethiopia and Kazakhstan abstained. A negative vote – or veto – from one of the Council’s five permanent members means a resolution cannot be adopted.

Trump meets Xi: What's at stake

(CNN)It's a blind date with global ramifications.

President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping meet for the first time Thursday and will seek to forge a connection and to stabilize the world's most important diplomatic relationship, despite a gulf between them in experience, temperament and global outlook.

Both have a long way to come to meet in the middle.

Trump, the brash, outspoken, political novice who seems to give little mind to policy details, anchored his campaign on China bashing. He once warned that China had committed "rape" against the US economyand tweeted that global warming was a Chinese ruse to damage US manufacturing.

5 April 2017 – While the first phase in implementing the recently agreed peace deal between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) remains largely on track, the “relatively short window of opportunity” to build a solid foundation for peace requires consistent vigilance, the United Nations envoy in that country told the Security Council today.
