On 35th Edsa anniversary, Duterte tells Filipinos to protect rights, democratic institutions

MANILA, Philippines — On the 35th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution, President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday called on Filipinos to be vigilant in protecting their rights and the country’s democratic institutions.

“As we contemplate the relevance of this occasion, let us proceed with renewed hope and optimism towards the realization of our shared aspirations for our nation,” he said in a statement.

Belarus human rights situation deteriorating further, warns UN rights chief

As the WHO investigated coronavirus origins in China, Beijing pushed a conspiracy about the US

(CNN)When World Health Organization investigators wrapped up their work examining the origins of the coronavirus in Wuhan this month, Chinese officials were clear where they felt the WHO should look next.

"(We hope) that following China's example, the US side will act in a positive, science-based and cooperative manner on the origin-tracing issue (and) invite WHO experts in for an origin-tracing study," Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said last week.

WHO Africa encourages the use of AstraZeneca vaccine despite variants

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN)The World Health Organization (WHO) African region has backed the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 even in countries reporting variants of the disease.

"While a vaccine that protects against all forms of Covid-19 illness is our biggest hope, preventing severe cases and hospitalizations which overwhelm hospitals and health systems is crucial," Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO regional director for Africa, said at a news briefing Thursday.

COVID: Using AstraZeneca vaccine is ‘right thing to do’ for everyone, says WHO expert panel

A World Health Organization (WHO) expert panel countered concerns over the efficacy of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine on Wednesday, insisting that “it’s the right thing to do” to use it – even in countries where variants had surfaced.

“Even if you have the circulation of a variant in a country, there is no reason that we see for now, not to use the AstraZeneca vaccine as indicated, to be able to reduce the levels of severe disease in that population”, said Dr Alejandro Cravioto, Chair of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE).

Deep fears of violent crackdown in Myanmar, UN rights chief warns

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has voiced “deep fears” of a violent crackdown on dissenting voices in Myanmar, where the military assumed all powers and declared a state of emergency after overthrowing the civilian government and arresting top political leaders, on Monday.

“Given the security presence on the streets in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, as well as in other cities, there are deep fears of a violent crackdown on dissenting voices”, High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet said in a statement on Monday.
