US sanctions 24 Chinese companies over South China Sea island building

(CNN)The United States government has imposed sanctions on dozens of Chinese companies for helping Beijing advance its territorial claims in the South China Sea -- the first punitive action of its kind over the disputed waters, and one that is almost certain to escalate tensions between the countries.

In a statement Wednesday, the US Commerce Department said the 24 state-owned companies -- including several subsidiaries of the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) -- played a "role in helping the Chinese military construct and militarize the internationally condemned artificial islands in the South China Sea" and "must be held responsible."

Facing pandemic, economic and political challenges, Iraq Government ‘operating in the eyes of multiple storms at once’

The COVID-19 pandemic is aggravating deep-rooted economic, social and political challenges in Iraq, but elections in 2021 – if credible - could open a new chapter for the Middle East nation after years of conflict and strife, the UN’s top official in the country said Wednesday.

Briefing the Security Council via video-teleconference, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaeret said that for important – and painful – reforms to take root, Iraq’s political class must unite and put the nation’s interests first in order to unlock a brighter future for all its citizens.

IHL Day 2020: Preserving human dignity in times of armed conflict

As we commemorate International Humanitarian Law Day on this day, August 12, we recall the Geneva Conventions which came into being on this same day, August 12, 71 years ago, in the aftermath of the Second World War.

The Geneva Conventions are among the very few international treaties that have been ratified by all countries around the world. They reflect more than just law, embodying universal values of ethical behavior during wartime. This set of rules seeks, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict, protecting persons who are not or no longer participating in hostilities and restricting the means and methods of warfare. This includes the obligation to care for all wounded and sick, regardless of whether they are wounded fighters of non-state armed groups, members of the State’s armed forces or civilians. The rules of IHL continue to apply in their entirety during the current COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, respect for these fundamental rules is even more important today, to ensure that all those affected by the double threat of COVID-19 and armed conflict are respected and protected.

Belarus: UN rights chief condemns violence against protesters, calls for grievances to be heard

The flow of free information is “crucial” in a democratic society, the UN human rights chief said on Wednesday, spotlighting the landlocked eastern European nation of Belarus, “especially in a context of crisis and social unrest”.

Following the announcement by the authorities of the preliminary results from Sunday’s presidential election, immediately questioned by opposition parties, largely peaceful protests erupted throughout Belarus, prompting a heavy crackdown by the security forces.

In the latest sign of Covid-19-related racism, Muslims are being blamed for England's coronavirus outbreaks

London (CNN)Coronavirus conspiracy theorists have spread baseless rumors online -- frequently targeting minorities -- since the beginning of the pandemic. In England the latest wave of vitriol criticizes Muslims, blaming them for spreading Covid-19.

Muslims were caught off guard last week, when the UK government suddenly announced local lockdowns in a slew of areas in northern England where cases have spiked. The announcement came just hours before Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest festivals in Islam.

Philippines: UN and partners launch major COVID-19 response plan to aid 5.4 million

Prioritizing the safety and well-being of women and girls, the UN and partners launched on Tuesday a COVID-19 humanitarian response plan to assist some 5.4 million of the poorest and most marginalized people in the Philippines.

According to the UN, the Humanitarian Country Team, the COVID-19 Response Plan aims to provide "critical health interventions and multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance" to those in epidemic hotspots and will be the largest response since 2013, when Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda ravaged the country and claimed some 7,800 lives.
