Iran's Rouhani dismisses Trump's threats saying 'America is alone'

New York (CNN)Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said today that the US is the problem: an isolated violator of international laws led by a team of political and diplomatic novices that is earning the world's disapproval.

"Today it became clear that America is alone," Rouhani said at a press conference in New York, adding that other world leaders told him they disapproved of President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the nuclear deal that eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

UN chief concerned over havoc of Typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippines

Secretary-General António Guterres

said on Monday that he was saddened by the “loss of life and extensive destruction” caused by Typhoon Mangkhut across the Philippines.

According to news reports, dozens have been killed; some of them buried by landslides, while sheltering from the storm.

Landslide buries more than 20 homes in Cebu, Philippines

(CNN)Rescuers at the site of a landslide on the resort island of Cebu in the Philippines can hear shouting from beneath the rubble as they attempt to shift debris covering more than 20 homes, officials say.

Four bodies have so far been pulled from the mud in the City of Naga, south of the tourist beaches, including a four-year-old child and elderly woman, Bureau of Fire Protection rescue chief Supt. Samuel Tadeo said.

‘Direct existential threat’ of climate change nears point of no return, warns UN chief

The world risks crossing the point of no return on climate change, with disastrous consequences for people across the planet and the natural systems that sustain them, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Monday, calling for more leadership and greater ambition for climate action, to reverse course.

The pledge made by world leaders in the Paris Agreement three years ago to stop temperature rising by less than 2-degree-Celsius and working to keep the increase as close as possible to 1.5-degree-Celsius, “were really the bare minimum to avoid the worst impacts of climate change,” said Secretary-General Guterres, in a landmark speech on climate action, at UN Headquarters in New York.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut: Alerts issued as huge storm nears Philippines
Hong Kong (CNN)Countries across east and southeast Asia are issuing emergency alerts and ordering evacuations as two typhoons barrel down on the region.

Around 12,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying parts of China's Guangdong province and shipping halted ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Barijat Thursday, according to state media.
But the real concern is Super Typhoon Mangkhut, which is still gathering strength as it nears the northern Philippines.

Earthquake buries homes under landslides in Hokkaido, Japan

Tokyo (CNN)Yet another natural disaster has struck part of Japan, continuing a summer of chaos that has seen the country weather deadly floods, typhoons, earthquakes, landslides and heatwaves.
At least seven people were killed when a magnitude-6.7 quake struck the northern island of Hokkaido early Thursday, causing landslides which buried a large number of homes at the foot of a ridge.

With AI, jobs are changing but no mass unemployment expected – UN labour experts

The rise of frontier technologies like Artificial Intelligence has caused fears of robots taking over blue-collar jobs, but a United Nations expert says humans still have the upper hand given their creativity and ability to form relationships.

Ekkehard Ernst, Chief of Macro-economic policies and job unit at the UN International Labour Organization (ILO), says the manufacturing sector does not stand to profit most from AI, at least not in developed countries, and will not suffer the forecasted demise. The jobs more likely to be impacted are in service sectors such as construction, health care, and business.
