(CNN)2020 has been far from festive, but as the year comes to an end, many of Europe's governments are scrambling to avoid stringent lockdowns over the Christmas holidays.

The push to save the celebration comes despite the fact that other religious festivals -- including Christian ones -- have been marked in a muted fashion in recent months.

UN report finds Gaza suffered $16.7 billion loss from siege and occupation

Israel’s military operations and prolonged closure of Gaza, has caused economic damage of $16.7 billion between 2007 and 2018, driving the poverty rate up almost fourfold compared to what it might have otherwise been, the UN trade and development agency UNCTAD said in a report published on Wednesday.

Gaza’s economy was on the verge of collapse, notes the report for the UN General Assembly, entitled “Economic costs of the Israeli occupation for the Palestinian people: The Gaza Strip under closure and restrictions”.

Almost a million people have been given an experimental Chinese coronavirus vaccine, pharmaceutical giant claims

Hong Kong (CNN)Almost a million people have been given an experimental coronavirus vaccine developed by Sinopharm as part of an emergency-use program authorized by Beijing, the Chinese pharmaceutical giant's chairman said.

No serious adverse effects have been reported from vaccine recipients so far, Sinopharm said Wednesday in an article on social media platform WeChat, citing Chairman Liu Jingzhen.

In a joint message, President of the European Parliament David Sassoli and UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore called for urgent investment to protect children’s futures.

Race for the White House narrows as votes are counted in key battlegrounds

(CNN)The cliffhanger election race is moving to a pivotal moment in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada as the final votes are counted that could swing the White House toward former Vice President Joe Biden or hand President Donald Trump a second term.

Two days after Election Day, the churn of results is expected to offer more clarity Thursday on the destiny of the race and when the final result might become known. Biden currently leads with 253 electoral votes to Trump's 213, and 270 electoral votes are needed to win the presidency.

If the former vice president wins Pennsylvania, the race will be over. Thousands of mostly mail-in votes remain uncounted so far, with Biden trailing by just more than 116,000 votes. The Keystone State's Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat, told CNN that the result could come as early as Thursday and that he believed outstanding ballots in areas that favor Democrats would deliver a clear win for Biden.

The Democratic nominee has also been making a run in Georgia, which has 16 electoral votes, where the President's lead dwindled to nearly 15,000 votes Thursday as results came in from Fulton County around Atlanta with 98% of the state vote count reported. There are more than 60,000 votes left to be counted in the state, Gabriel Sterling, a Georgia voting official, said in a news conference Thursday.
The story was reversed in Arizona, where several tranches of votes from Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, narrowed Biden's lead to just under 69,000 votes with Trump's team insisting the President will eventually prevail and keep his hopes of a path to 270 alive.

Belarus targets women human rights defenders after disputed August elections

Independent UN experts criticized Belarus on Tuesday for persecuting women human rights defenders, who have been involved in the mass protests underway in the country since August’s controversial presidential election.

"Belarus has effectively criminalized human rights work at a time when the work of human rights defenders is more essential than ever”, said Mary Lawlor, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
