Marginalized voices must be ‘included and amplified’ in digital technology space: UN Chief

New thinking is needed to better address deep gender gaps in access to digital technologies, seek out networks of the increasingly active elderly population, and support young people facing a rapidly transforming labour market, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told delegates on Monday, at the 2018 Internet Governance Forum (IGF), hosted in Paris by the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Mr. Guterres told the assembled delegates that he wants the Panel, and the IGF, to inspire new language on digital cooperation, weaving stories into a global narrative, and to included and amplify the weak and the missing voices: “I urge your digital discussions to move beyond the so-called ‘usual suspects’. Digital growth affects everyone, and traditionally unheard and marginalized voices should be more visibly involved in the IGF’s work. Get stories from people with disabilities, who are among the most creative users of digital technology.”

International crime gangs amass ‘staggering’ profits in conflict zones, expert tells Security Council

During a Tuesday briefing to the Security Council, Tuesday Reitano, Deputy Director of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, described the problem as a “global and accelerating phenomenon, and a threat to international peace and security,” that, in conflict areas alone, is generating around $31.5 billion in illicit profits.

Ms. Reitano’s address was delivered as part of the annual briefing by UN Peacekeeping operations, led by Alexander Zuev, Assistant Secretary-General for the Rule of Law, at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and included presentations from UN Police Commissioners, on the work being carried out by Missions in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Haiti.

Dubai Police start training on flying motorbikes

California-based Hoversurf has started to train the first Dubai Police officers to fly its S3 2019 Hoverbike. It's one of dozens of electronic vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles at various stages of development -- and some others have already taken off.

A year after California-based startup Hoversurfshowcased its hoverbike at tech expo GITEX in the white and green livery of the Dubai Police, the company has returned with a new model and evidence its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle might be, well, taking off.

Making good on a deal signed in 2017, Hoversurf has now gifted Dubai Police its first serial production unit of the S3 2019 Hoverbike and has begun training officers to fly it.

Brigadier Khalid Nasser Alrazooqi, general director of Dubai Police's artificial intelligence department, described the eVTOL vehicle as a first responder unit used to access hard to reach areas. He said he aims to have hoverbikes in action by 2020.

More than nine in ten children exposed to deadly air pollution

Air pollution is “stunting children’s brains” and affecting their health in more ways than was previously suspected, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

In a call for concrete policy pledges from governments across the world to tackle the problem, the UN health agency reportsthat more than nine in 10 youngsters breathe air that is so polluted, “it puts their health and development at serious risk”.

The WHO findings – launched on the eve of the agency’s first Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health in Geneva - include the estimate that 600,000 children died from acute lower respiratory infections caused by polluted air in 2016.

Dutton's comments came after Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed that his government is working "quietly" to remove the remaining children on Nauru, where they were sent as part of Australia's strict immigration policies.
