Lives at risk if wireless technology demands are not held in check: UN weather watchdog

Amid growing competition for radio wave space due to new wireless technologies, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Thursday called on governments to protect radio frequencies allocated to potentially life-saving weather forecasting services.

Earth observation services vital to weather forecasts and long-term climate change monitoring, are having to share more and more limited bandwith, with the rollout of new communication devices, including the new 5G phone data service.

Cotabato quake death toll climbs to eight, 394 injured

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 30) — The death toll due to the magnitude 6.6 earthquakethat jolted Tulunan, Cotabato and nearby provinces Tuesday morning has risen to eight, authorities said.

The latest fatality is a 64-year-old man from Carmen, Cotabato who died from cardiac arrest while inside a madrasa, or Islamic school, during the quake.

UN rights chief urges ‘immediate dialogue’ to end Chile unrest

The top UN human rights official is calling for politicians and civil society in Chile to engage in “immediate dialogue” to resolve the deadly crisis which has gripped the nation in recent days.

At least eight people have died and more than 40 have been injured in protests against rising inequality. The demonstrations began last week following a proposal to increase public transportation fares, which was later scrapped.

(CNN)The demonstrations seemingly began with a single spark. In Chile it was a hike in metro fares. In Lebanon it was a tax on WhatsApp calls. In Hong Kong it was a proposed extradition bill.

Now those flickers have ignited wider protest movements, lifting the lid on deeper inequalities, frustrations and lack of autonomy that go back decades. And the discontent doesn't appear to be subsiding anytime soon.

Kurds say Turkey is violating hours-old 'ceasefire' in northern Syria

(CNN)Clashes continued on the border between Turkey and Syria on Friday, according to eyewitnesses and Kurdish fighters, despite US Vice President Mike Pence's announcement that he and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had brokered a five-day ceasefire there.

Shelling and artillery fire was reported Friday in the border town of Ras al-Ain, one of the targets of Turkey's week-old offensive against Kurdish fighters, who have long been backed by the United States.

Who are the Kurds and why are they under attack?
(CNN)Hundreds of people living in northern Syria near the Turkish border are fleeing, herding their loved ones and running from an unknown fate as fires blaze behind them.

These people are members of an ethnic minority known as the Kurdish people.

Living in a region controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), a defense force mostly made up of Kurds, the frequently targeted group is once again under attack as Turkey launches an operation to move Kurdish forces away from its border.

World Mental Health Day sheds light on worrying rates of youth suicide

Worldwide, 800,000 people die by suicide each year - one every 40 seconds - making it the second leading cause of death among young people (aged 15 to 29), the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday, spotlighting suicide prevention as the theme for this year's World Mental Health Day.

“Mental health has been neglected for too long,'' Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message for theDay, saying it needs to be addressed urgently, as a matter "that concerns us all.”

Any war between the US and Iran would be a catastrophe. And no one could win it

(CNN)US President Donald Trump's recent decisions to avoid military action against Iran in the face of tactical humiliation and strategic threats have been smart, subtle and ethically unimpeachable.
They're also a gamble.

According to intelligence sources in the Middle East and the West, recent attacks on Saudi oil facilities were launched from Iranian soil. Iran has been blamed by the US, UK, France and Germany among others for being behind the cruise missile attacks; claims that the Houthi rebels in Yemen were responsible were dismissed as implausible.

Peace icon Mahatma Gandhi’s message of ‘mutual understanding, equality’ reverberates on Day of Non-Violence

On Wednesday, the global community marks the International Day of Non-Violence, which this year coincided with the 150th anniversary of the birth of the global peace icon who led India to independence, Mahatma Gandhi.

“His vision continues to resonate across the world, including through the work of the United Nations for mutual understanding, equality, sustainable development, the empowerment of young people, and the peaceful resolution of disputes”, Secretary-General António Guterres said in his message commemorating the day.
