30 August 2017 – The United Nations Security Council today extended its authorization of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) until 31 May 2018, approving a reduction of its uniformed personnel to a maximum 21,626 by 31 December 2017, with an eye towards the gradual handover over of responsibilities to Somali security forces.

Spain attacks suspect released from custody

(CNN)One of the four suspects detained after last week's terror attacks in Catalonia was released Thursday pending further investigation.

However, Salah El Karib has been ordered to appear in court every Monday, according to a document from Spain's National Court sent to CNN. He also had to hand over his passport and has been banned from leaving Spain.

The Catalan police had detained Karib because his credit card was used to buy airline tickets for two of the suspected terrorists, Driss Oukabir and Abdelbaki Es Satty.

The judge considered that Karib's explanation that he had bought the tickets at the request of Driss' brother, Moussa Oukabir, was credible and matched evidence that investigators were able to obtain, the document said.

North Korea says Guam strike plan ready within days

Hagatna, Guam (CNN)A North Korean plan to fire four missiles near the US Pacific territory of Guam will be ready for Kim Jong Un's consideration in days, state media has reported, as an unprecedented exchange of military threats between Washington and Pyongyang intensifies.

The intermediate-range missiles would be fired east and over Japan before landing around 30 to 40 kilometers (18 to 25 miles) off the coast of the tiny island if the plan is implemented, according to state-run KCNA. Guam is more than 3,000 kilometers from North Korea.

Venezuela: UN urges Government and opposition to relaunch political talks

8 August 2017 – Concerned that recent developments in Venezuela could lead to further escalation of tensions and hamper a peaceful solution to the crisis, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres again today urged the Government and the opposition to relaunch negotiations for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.

Trump signs bill approving new sanctions against Russia

1 August 2017 – Describing the situation in Yemen as “very bleak,” with “no end in sight,” a senior United Nations official envoy today said the war-torn country, already reeling from malnutrition and dwindling health care, is plummeting into further distress amid a deadly cholera outbreak and looming famine.

“Historically, Yemen has been one of the poorest Arab nations – if not the poorest– with [poverty] and corruption, poor governance and poor infrastructure. The war has simply made it much worse,” said Auke Lootsma, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Country
