'Hell on earth': UN mulls Syria action as Eastern Ghouta deaths rise

(CNN)UN Security Council members may vote Thursday on a temporary ceasefire for Syria's besieged Eastern Ghouta region, a day after the United Nations' chief deplored the plight of the civilians trapped there as "hell on earth."

A draft resolution put forward by Sweden and Kuwait on Wednesday calls for a 30-day halt in the fighting in the rebel-held Damascus suburb, where intense shelling by Russian-backed Syrian regime forces has taken a heavy toll this week.

Another 'unspeakable tragedy' at a US school leaves 17 dead in Florida

(CNN)A gunman unleashed horror at his former high school in South Florida on Wednesday, authorities said, slaughtering at least 17 unsuspecting students and adults and leaving the country asking why another school massacre has happened yet again.

The suspect, Nikolas Cruz, 19, gunned down victims with a rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland shortly before 3 p.m. after he allegedly activated a fire alarm, sending people outside unaware of what was to come, officials said.

UN agency sets ambitious target to reduce hunger and poverty for millions worldwide

Amid a global rise in hunger and poverty on back of the impacts of climate change and conflict, the United Nations rural development agency today announced an ambitious target to generate resources to fund loans and grants to enable millions in developing countries strengthen their food security and livelihoods.

The total, $3.5 billion, announced Tuesday by the 176 member States of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will enable the UN agency expand its projects and programmes to benefit 47 million smallholder farmers with improved technology, finance and knowledge; improve market access for 46 million; and build resilience to climate change impact of another 24 million.

Poland to outlaw references to 'Polish death camps' in Holocaust bill

The Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland is often referred to as a "Polish death camp," a phrase that Poland is seeking to outlaw.

(CNN)Poland's senate has approved a controversial bill that makes it illegal to accuse Poles of complicity in crimes committed by Nazi Germany, including the Holocaust.

‘I feel guilty I survived;’ youngest Schindler’s list Holocaust survivor tells United Nations her story

31 January 2018 – More than seven decades after the end of the Holocaust, Eva Lavi – the youngest living Holocaust survivor saved by German industrialist Oskar Schindler – still feels guilty that she survived when so many of the Jewish children her age at that time were killed, including her cousins.

“It was not easy to be a child survivor after the War. I continued to hide. Why? My parents did not take me to the meetings with other survivors to not hurt the feelings of those that lost their children,” Ms. Lavi told the United Nations annual Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, held Wednesday at the world body’s Headquarters in New York.
