Transparency and tech together can safeguard taxpayers' money

Fraud, waste and abuse of taxpayers’ money in government procurement is unfortunately far too common across the globe. In the US alone, the government spent $4.11 trillion in 2018, with $400 billion of that going directly to contracts for goods and services. It is impossible to know how much taxpayer money is wasted, but in one case the City of New York was overbilled $500 million for a municipal project.

Corruption is seen throughout the world. In a 2018 OECD survey, 42% of state owned enterprises (SOE) respondents reported that over the past three years, corrupt acts or other irregular practices occurred in their company. Given that SOEs comprise approximately 22% of the world’s largest companies, the significance of this fact cannot be understated.

Corruption undermines democracy and contributes to instability, warns senior UN anti-crime official

Corruption undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability, Mirella Dummar-Frahi, Civil Society Team Leader at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) warned at the UN Civil Society Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ms. Dummar-Frahi called for greater cooperation, joint operations and mutual legal assistance among Governments, with involvement from civil society, the private sector and international organizations.

National Youth Council of Dominica

Today August 12th 2019 is celebrated as International Youth Day. The National Youth Council of Dominica, would like to take the opportunity to wish every young person in Dominica, the Region and the World happy International Youth Day. We pray for your continued success and the fortitude to overcome challenges that you may encounter.

This year’s theme is “transforming education” we personally consider such a theme to be very relevant and consistent with our desire to empower every youth within this country. Education is the single most important catalyst to transform a society. Economic prosperity is also closely link to a country’s human capacity. As a country we have made remarkable strides as regards education, since we have achieved universal access to primary, secondary and recently tertiary education. Essentially creating access for all desiring an education. We sort as well to be as inclusive as possible by breaking down barriers of entry irrespective of one’s class, gender or disability. Granted that there is always room for improvement.

‘We are facing a learning crisis’, UN chief warns on International Youth Day

Schools are “not equipping young people with the skills they need to navigate the technological revolution”, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned, in a message released to mark the UN’s International Youth Day.

Transforming Education is the theme for this year, which comes at a time when the world is facing a “learning crisis”, says Mr Guterres, and students need not only to learn, “but to learn how to learn”.

Democrats and the FBI say white extremism is a huge problem. Trump disagrees

(CNN)The issue of white extremism is taking on a new and important role in the American political conversation, and it is separate from the problem of guns and the people who will use them to mow down their fellow citizens.

The two issues mix together after mass shootings carried out by racially motivated killers. But they are often distinct.

There was apparently no racial motivation for the gunman in Dayton, Ohio, who carried out his massacre hours after a gunman in El Paso, Texas, posted a racist screed and then shot up a Walmart. And there were no guns involved in the violence surrounding a 2017 gathering of white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Bigotry makes politicians ‘complicit in the violence that follows’ : UN independent experts

Responding to the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio on Saturday, a group of independent UN experts has called out the “increased use of divisive language”, as well as attempts to marginalise racial, ethnic and religious minorities”, by some politicians and leaders.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent stated that they “encourage the United States to address such violence without delay as a matter of white supremacy and racism”, adding that the refusal to take “immediate and direct action” to prevent further acts of domestic terrorism, exacerbates complicity in the violence.

At least 6 killed in suicide bombing in Somalia

(CNN)The mayor of the Somali capital of Mogadishu was wounded and at least six others killed in a suicide bomb attack Wednesday on a government building, the country's information minister said.

The mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman, was badly wounded in the blast, Somalia's Minister of Information Mohamed Abdi Hayir told reporters. Among those killed were two district commissioners and three regional-level directors, he said. In addition to the mayor, five others also were wounded, Hayir said.

New UN report shows record number of children killed and maimed in conflict

A new UN report has found that 2018 was the worst year on record for children caught up in armed conflict; the year saw the highest numbers killed or maimed since the United Nations began monitoring the violation.

In the 20 conflict situations monitored in the 2018 edition of the Annual Report of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, released Tuesday, more than 12,000 children were killed or maimed that year.
