People across ethnic and religious divides hold vigil in Yangon, Myanmar.

Urgent action is needed to prevent the situation in Myanmar from escalating into a “full-blown conflict”, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet warned on Thursday.  

Ms. Bachelet’s alert came in a new report from her office OHCHR, which details widespread violations by the military against the country's people, some of which may constitute crimes against humanity or war crimes.

Ida turns New York City into a front line of extreme weather supercharged by climate change

(CNN)After Hurricane Ida battered the southern US states, its remnants lashed the northeast on Wednesday night, transforming New York City into a danger zone Thursday morning. Ida dumped heavy amounts of rain on Central Park and the subway was inundated with fast-moving floods, knocking nearly the whole system out of operation. The neighboring city of Newark, New Jersey, saw the heaviest single day of rain on record.

4.1 billion lack social safety net, warns UN labour agency
