Oil prices surge and strikes ramp up across the Middle East on Day 13 of the conflict
Both Iran and the US have indicated they’re prepared for the war to carry on as it enters Day 13.
We got the first public message attributed to Iran’s newly named Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei a short while ago, though he’s yet to appear in video or release an audio statement.
Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Strait of Hormuz must ultimately reopen. His message comes as Brent crude oil hovered around $100 a barrel Thursday.
We’re tracking the latest developments as they unfold. Catch up here:
US bolsters military assets: The top US military commander in Europe told lawmakers that some US air defenses from the continent have been moved to the Middle East.
Status of Iran’s current leaders: The Iranian regime shows no signs of imminent collapse nearly two weeks since the start of the US and Israeli war, according to American intelligence assessments described by two people familiar with the situation.
Concerns over electricity infrastructure: Iran’s top security official Ali Larijani said the “whole region will go dark” in less than 30 minutes if Iran’s electricity infrastructure is targeted, responding to comments by US President Donald Trump.
Attacks in Lebanon: Israel is raising the specter of a major ground operation in Lebanon as fighting intensifies with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group. Mass evacuation orders in Lebanon could push the number of displaced people to more than 1 million within the next few days, an expert said. Large plumes of smoke could be seen rising above central Beirut amid reports of new strikes on Thursday.
Companies issue warnings: A growing number of large financial companies have told staffers to stay away from their offices in the Middle East.
More on critical passageway: Wright said the US Navy is currently unable to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, though he suggested that capability could be in place later this month.
US downplays spike in oil prices: Trump sought to play down rising oil prices and market volatility, arguing the US benefits when energy prices climb. Trump’s comments come as the International Energy Agency warned the world could be facing the “largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market.”
Gas prices edged up 2 cents a gallon in the latest reading from AAA, taking the average price to $3.60 a gallon, after one of the smallest daily increases in the recent run-up in gas prices.
