Trump's big mistake on Syria refugees

(CNN)On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that effectively suspends the entry of Syrian refugees into the United States indefinitely. As he signed the order, President Trump said that this was "to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States."

28 January 2017 – The United Nations agencies dealing with global refugee and migration issues today expressed the hope that the United States will continue its strong leadership role and long tradition of protecting those who are fleeing conflict and persecution.

“The needs of refugees and migrants worldwide have never been greater, and the US resettlement programme is one of the most important in the world,” says a joint statementfrom the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Journey to safety was more terrifying than Aleppo, activists say

Gaziantep, Turkey (CNN)When Mojahed left his native Aleppo he thought the worst was over. What could be more terrible than living in the besieged Syrian city people called hell on earth?

But the 24-year-old activist, now living across the border in Turkey, says his harrowing journey out of the country was more terrifying than all the years of war.

"Inside Syria, before we thought about fleeing I came close to death many times. Several times we were shelled directly, and it happened once that I was five meters away from an explosion," Mojahed said. "But the moment we crossed into Turkey, this was the worst moment ever."

16 January 2017 – While efforts to fully implement a ceasefire in Syria continue, senior United Nations humanitarian officials today appealed for immediate, unconditional, and safe access to reach the children and families who are still cut off from relief aid across the Middle Eastern country.

“We must not let 2017 repeat the tragedies of 2016 for Syria,” said a joint statement signed by World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Anthony Lake, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O'Brien, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Margaret Chan, and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

(CNN)It's not impossible that the United States, much of the world, or even the Kremlin have been looking at the Trump-Putin lovefest through the wrong end of the telescope. Why not examine just how Donald Trump might play Vladimir Putin?

Everyone assumes the Russian President has been and will continue to be calling the shots in a Trump relationship. Certainly, as the US Intelligence Community Assessment released Friday observed, "Putin and the Russian government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump." Which should suggest that Putin holds all the cards -- he arguably played a major role in electing Donald Trump as president.

Syrian refugees in Lebanon face economic hardship and food shortages – joint UN agency study

6 January 2017 – A joint United Nations agency study has revealed that Syrian refugees in Lebanon remain highly vulnerable and that despite living there for years, their economic situation continues to be difficult, leaving more than a third food insecure.

UN condemns terrorist attack in Istanbul on New Year's Day

1 January 2017 – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today condemned the despicable terrorist attack overnight on New Year celebrations at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, in which dozens of people were killed and injured.

“He hopes that the organizers and perpetrators of this heinous act will be identified and brought to justice swiftly,” said a statement issued by Mr. Guterres' spokesman.
