Palestine: General Assembly discusses failed UN membership bid




Palestine’s recent attempt to become a full member of the United Nations was the focus of discussion in the General Assembly on Wednesday.

A 2022 initiative, resolution 262, calls for the UN’s most representative body to meet within 10 days if the veto is used in the Security Council by one of its permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – who are granted this special voting power.

Syria: Security Council demands immediate humanitarian access across battle lines

22 December 2015 – In its first resolution on Syria since granting the United Nations an enhanced role in seeking to end the five-year-long war, the Security Council today demanded that all parties, particularly the Syrian authorities, immediately open routes across conflict lines and borders to let in vital humanitarian aid.

12 October 2015 – Marking the first international gathering on food security and nutrition since world leaders approved the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) commenced today, focusing on the eradication of hunger by 2030.
